Batwa People

The Batwa people are believed to be the first indigenous inhabitants of Central Africa (areas straddling Uganda, Rwanda and eastern Congo). The bamboo and tropical rainforests are their natural habitat as hunter-gatherers.

Since the gazetting of these forests as national parks in the 1990’s and the stringent environmental laws introduced due to international interest in the dwindling Gorilla population and the income Tourism generates; the Batwa people have been displaced, squatting on other people’s land.

Many families have resorted to begging for survival. Consequently, the Batwa have nothing – no land or possessions to speak of. They have little to no education, and they struggle to find food everyday.

Our first efforts to help these people began after God led us to partner with a Mukiga pastor with a burden for these people. Pastor Robert Muhereza has started a small school and we are helping him to develop this.

We initiated a feeding program three days each week, and began paying the teachers a salary. Now, the school has 75 children, and there are books, pencils and paper in the hands of every school child.

There are a few children who have managed to complete their primary education. We are currently supporting one in Secondary School, and with continued support, we will assist others to enter higher levels of education.

We have also acquired the tools that will enable us to train and teach the Word of God to the adults who are not able to read or write. We are using recorded tapes and picture books that can be carried to those who are still hiding in the forest. Our vision is to bring transformation, physically, mentally and spiritually.

We assisted the purchase of land on top of a mountain to build the Batwa Community Church and School. These people will now be raised to mountainous heights who have been considered the very lowest in Uganda.
