Three Stones
Community Health Education

We aim to change the way people think about health.

Utilising resources at village level, we seek to empower families domestically, transforming their lives through education in the prevention of many common sicknesses.

The typical African household’s kitchen fire has a foundation of three stones to support the cooking pot.  The essential three stones to good health are safe water; hygiene and good sanitation; and a balanced diet.  These are the foundation stones to a community's health.

International statistics show that three million children in Sub-Saharan Africa die each year from preventable water-borne diseases.  It is hard to believe that a simple step like washing hands after using the common outdoor latrine would save so many lives.  The trainers frequently comment, “This training is much appreciated by the people, as it is saving lives.”

Reports indicate that during the first twelve months of the programme, trainers have taught more than ten thousand rural people.  This demonstrates the effectiveness of equipping indigenous trainers to pass on their knowledge to their own people. These regional trainers are now training local trainers in safe water, good sanitation and proper hygiene.

The vehicle of communication is the local church.  Trainers are saying, “People are coming to church, since they are seeing the church as a caring body”.  The local Church should be a place where spiritual health affects the people’s environment.  This programme enhances Missionary Venture’s work in supporting the indigenous church to be more effective in its communities.

The Project's History and Future

Three Stones has developed over several years, having 42 trainers passing through the first level of training in 2006.

The second and third level training was available to 20 regional trainers.  The second level training took place in Kampala during June 2007.  The third and last level of the initial training took place in  2008. As with all health workers, updating is essential and conducted annually.

Pat Crook, the programme director and our community health specialist, has almost completed a pilot training programme in Kamwenge District  and is now seeking major donor funding to launch the full Three Stones programme in other districts of Uganda.

Project Support

This project is not financially supported at present, yet its value to the Ugandan Church in transforming communities is proving vital.

Three Stones has been fully approved by the Medical Council of Missionary Ventures International and the Ugandan Government's Ministry of Health.

We are moving ahead by faith and looking for prayerful supporters.
